‘The Village’
A Main Street America Initiative

EXPLORE THE STRATEGY
Building a Stronger Orofino, Together
The Orofino Village Alliance — The Village — is a community-led initiative working to strengthen the heart of Orofino through connection, preservation, thoughtful revitalization, and community pride.
Our work is guided by the Main Street Approach™, a proven framework developed by Main Street America to help communities strengthen historic downtowns and commercial districts through locally driven, comprehensive revitalization. Rather than prescribing what a community should become, the approach helps communities build upon the people, places, history, businesses, and assets that already make them unique.
For Orofino, that work began with listening.
In 2025, Main Street America and Idaho Main Street worked with Orofino residents, businesses, property owners, community organizations, and local leaders to study our downtown, gather community input, examine market and visitor data, and identify opportunities for Orofino’s future. Nearly 300 people participated in the community survey alone.
The result was the Idaho Main Street Transformation Strategy for Orofino, a roadmap designed to guide revitalization efforts over the next three to five years.
And at the center of that strategy was an idea with very old roots:
The Village.
Historically, Orofino was known as The Village of Orofino. The Transformation Strategy recommends building upon that identity by developing downtown as a civic, social, and entrepreneurship hub — a place where people gather, businesses grow, history is honored, and community pride is visible.
That vision became the foundation for the Orofino Village Alliance.
The Main Street Approach
Successful revitalization isn’t one project, one event, or one organization.
The Main Street Approach organizes community revitalization around four interconnected areas: Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Vitality. Together, they provide a framework for turning community ideas into coordinated, measurable action.
ORGANIZATION
Bringing People Together
Strong communities are built through relationships.
Organization is about bringing residents, volunteers, businesses, property owners, nonprofits, civic organizations, local government, and community partners together around shared goals.
- Building strong community partnerships.
- Creating meaningful volunteer opportunities.
- Developing an active, representative Board and project teams.
- Establishing sustainable policies, funding, and organizational systems.
- Creating annual work plans with measurable goals, budgets, timelines, and accountability.
- Keeping the community informed and creating opportunities for people to participate.
The Transformation Strategy identifies relationship building, board development, and work-plan development as foundational priorities for establishing a sustainable Main Street program in Orofino.
PROMOTION
Telling Orofino’s Story
Promotion is bigger than advertising.
It’s about helping people rediscover what makes Orofino special — our history, businesses, people, traditions, river, outdoor lifestyle and unmistakable small-town character.
Over the next three to five years, The Village will work to:
- Create events and experiences that bring people together downtown.
- Celebrate Orofino’s heritage and community traditions.
- Tell the stories of our historic buildings, places, businesses, and people.
- Develop walking tours and other ways to experience Orofino’s history.
- Strengthen communication about what’s happening downtown.
- Create opportunities for organizations and businesses to participate in community-wide promotions.
- Highlight family-friendly and outdoor experiences that encourage residents and visitors to spend more time in Orofino.
The strategy specifically calls for stronger storytelling, walking tours, historic interpretation, business cross-promotions, family-focused activities, and communications that highlight Orofino’s outdoor and community assets.
DESIGN
Creating a Downtown We Are Proud Of
Design is how a community cares for the physical place it calls home.
For Orofino, that means honoring our historic character while creating a downtown that feels cared for, welcoming, accessible, beautiful, and unmistakably ours.
Our long-term opportunities include:
- Downtown cleanup and beautification.
- Flowers, landscaping and streetscape improvements.
- Historic building and home plaques.
- Preserving and sharing the stories of significant buildings and places.
- Improving wayfinding and signage.
- Supporting storefront and façade improvements.
- Creating comfortable places to sit, gather, walk and connect.
- Strengthening connections between downtown, City Park, the Clearwater River, and nearby recreation.
- Exploring interactive historic experiences, walking tours, and digital interpretation.
- Protecting the visual character that makes Orofino unique.
These priorities closely reflect the Transformation Strategy’s recommendations around beautification, historic preservation, building-history plaques, storefront improvements, wayfinding, pedestrian connections and public gathering spaces.
ECONOMIC VITALITY
Creating Opportunity
A healthy downtown needs places people love and businesses that can thrive there.
Economic Vitality focuses on strengthening the conditions that encourage investment, entrepreneurship, local business growth, and productive use of downtown properties.
The Village does not replace the work of our Chamber, economic-development partners, City, County, or individual businesses. Our role is to help create the environment, connections and partnerships that allow those efforts to succeed together.
Over the next three to five years, opportunities include:
- Supporting efforts to bring vacant and underused downtown spaces back into productive use.
- Connecting entrepreneurs with available spaces and community resources.
- Supporting façade and property-improvement initiatives.
- Encouraging entrepreneurship and locally owned businesses.
- Connecting emerging businesses and Farmers Market vendors with opportunities downtown.
- Supporting business education through partnerships with economic-development organizations.
- Improving connections between downtown businesses, lodging, recreation, City Park and the Clearwater River.
- Encouraging family-friendly and outdoor-recreation businesses and experiences that fit Orofino’s market.
The Transformation Strategy specifically recommends developing a pipeline to support business expansion, succession planning and new business development while better connecting entrepreneurs with available downtown space.
The Transformation Strategy
Main Street isn’t about trying to accomplish everything at once.
Transformation Strategies are deliberately designed around a three-to-five-year cycle, allowing communities to concentrate limited volunteer and financial resources on work capable of making a measurable difference. ID Orofino 2025 0618-2025 Trans…
For Orofino, Main Street America identified three priorities.
1. Build the Foundation
Before sustainable revitalization can happen, we need the organization capable of supporting it.
Our first priority is building The Village itself: relationships, partnerships, leadership, volunteers, policies, funding, communication systems, and a measurable annual work plan.
Build the organization that can sustain the work.
2. Build The Village
The Transformation Strategy envisions downtown Orofino as a civic, social and entrepreneurship hub.
That means creating visible community pride through beautification, historic preservation and community engagement while helping cultivate entrepreneurship and renewed investment downtown. ID Orofino 2025 0618-2025 Trans…
Create a downtown where people want to gather, participate, invest and belong.
3. Make Orofino Family Friendly
Our downtown, City Park, Clearwater River, surrounding forest and outdoor recreation assets give Orofino an opportunity many communities simply don’t have.
The strategy calls for creating an environment that welcomes families and people of all ages while connecting downtown more intentionally with outdoor recreation, local history and community experiences.
That includes:
- More family-friendly experiences downtown.
- Activities that connect children and families with Orofino’s history.
- More gatherings in downtown and City Park.
- Partnerships with schools, the library and youth organizations.
- Better connections to outdoor recreation.
- Events, music, activities and experiences that give people reasons to stay downtown longer.
- Stronger relationships with regional partners, including the Nez Perce Tribe and National Forest.
Build a downtown that belongs to every generation.
Community-Led. Partnership-Powered.
The Village isn’t here to do this work alone.
Main Street works when a community works together.
Our role is to help connect people and projects — working alongside residents, volunteers, businesses, property owners, the City of Orofino, Clearwater County, Clearwater County Economic Development, the Clearwater County Chamber of Commerce, schools, civic organizations, nonprofits, the Nez Perce Tribe, regional partners and others who care about Orofino’s future.
The Transformation Strategy itself calls for partners to be included in programming and work-plan development and for shared goals to be identified wherever possible.
Some projects will belong to The Village.
Some will belong to our partners.
And some of the best work will happen when we do it together.
This Is Our Village
Main Street America gives us a framework.
The Transformation Strategy gives us a roadmap.
But Orofino decides what Orofino becomes.
The Village exists to help turn community ideas into organized action — preserving what matters, improving what needs attention, creating reasons to gather, and building a downtown that reflects the history, character and people of Orofino.
HISTORY • COMMUNITY • BEAUTY • TOGETHER
Come be part of The Village.
